The cruel, cruel deniers of AI

It is worth viewing the pain of childbirth as something more than mere suffering.

The honest struggle of childbirth can give a mother a profound belief in her own strength and capacity, forging a deep bond between her and the child that isn't cheapened by taking an easy shortcut. Without the raw intensity of the pain, the screaming, and the challenge, the entire experience might lose the depth and moral value that makes it feel truly alive.

There’s also a certain humility in childbirth, especially when there is a great deal of pain, because it demands seriousness and responsibility from the doctor. Faced with such vulnerability, the doctor cannot be cavalier.

A century or two ago, this wasn’t an unusual perspective. Many respected minds believed that the anguished hours of childbirth carried significant moral value and that we shouldn’t simply erase this with shortcuts or the avoidance of pain.

When Dr. Charles Makes refused to use anesthesia, he didn’t see himself as stubborn, cruel, or backward. He genuinely believed that removing a mother’s pain in childbirth with anesthesia would strip the event of its honesty, weight, and purpose. Even as chloroform and ether became available and widely adopted, with many rushing to use them to relieve the pain of childbirth, Dr. Makes stood by his belief that pain was an essential part of the process.

He believed he was protecting something real, good, and moral, and his ethical convictions drove him to refuse anesthesia for his patients. However, over time, his peers distanced themselves from his views, his influence faded, and he became a living example of what happens when one resists progress while the world moves on.

The lesson is clear: if you stand still while others march ahead, you risk being left behind, ignored, and ridiculed.

What seems noble, ethical, and indispensable today may look foolish tomorrow, just as what appears evil, dishonest, or disloyal today may eventually seem normal, leaving people to wonder why it was ever contentious. If you don’t adapt to new knowledge and shifting truths, your old convictions will be crushed beneath the wheels of progress.
