Here's what you'll learn in this blog post :
How public opinion on AI art evolved from emotion to deep insights.
The biggest flaws in AI that make it uncreative.
Why the future of AI in art involves impressive artists modifying AI.
For those of us artists who are ambitious, we need to know how people feel and what they want.
We need to be fascinated with the question of how AI art will look in the future. Because it WILL be part of the future art world.
In this post, I'll give you a complete description of the evolution of public opinion ever since the AI art craze started.
This is very, very important for you if you want to know about the zeitgeist, so stick around.
If you want a video version of this, you can check this out :
PHASE 1 : EMOTION
The first thing when the AI craze began was that many artists went crazy and they said all sorts of unverified (even by researchers) about AI.
It's stealing images.
It doesn't understand the images it creates.
It's boring.
All these statements are easy enough to believe when you're emotional. But they're useless and don't accomplish anything. The truth is, we have no idea if they're true or not.
All in all, that's not a very interesting phase because it was just confusion, emotion and not real, deep, ground work.
PHASE 2 : GOOD CRITICISM
After a while, artists began actually thinking things through.
They argued that text prompting for AI creating art was just not enough. It doesn't offer enough control over the resulting images. Fair enough.
At the same time, we were also digging into AI research topics and understanding AI better.
Through this understanding, we showed that AI suffered major blockages that prevented it from actually being creative.
For the purposes of this post, I'll just list two, but you're welcome to check the rest of the website for more insight :)
these models are set because they're so huge. They are trained once, and all the advances in art that are made after that... Well, the model has no idea about them. Which really limits the expanse of how much you can do with it out of the box.
A much stronger flaw is inherent to the very nature of these AI models. And artists have no idea about it. AI models are trained to generate images that are as likely as possible within the training data set. What this means is that whenever it generates an image, it's going to look like the typical image from the dataset. And what this means is that AI is quite literally trained with the opposite objective of creativity. Which is generating things that are original, that don't look like the rest of the stuff out there.
This is very important for artists : AI models have in the very thing that makes them successful kind of a a deep flaw. It makes them uncreative.
PHASE 3 : ARTISTS GIVE UP, WHILE WE GET DEEPER INSIGHT
At that point, the general public kind of stopped coming up with new insights about AI.
They just repeated the same things over and over.
Or they straight up just stopped talking about AI, and tried to ignore it
Because it's painful to think about.
But we Don't think it's painful. It's exciting.
Even if we don't want to use AI in our art, it's exciting because we're looking at the future of the art world. And knowing about the future is the path to success. Then the ArtPostAI community went through various discussions, as well as some surprising encounter I had at my AI lab with... some very smart 14 -year-old
We found out that the thorough way through this flaw of the uncreativity of AI is to modify the AI.
If you want to know more about that you can check out this video. I'll give you the rundown below either way :)
So anytime an artist wants to do something with an AI, they have to modify it. Make it do something it's not done before.
And this means that very few will be able to produce creative outputs through AI. Because AI is uncreative out of the box.
But on the other hand, we are going to see in the future an explosion of people who have AI knowledge and a lot of artistic creativity.
These people will twist the AI into various very interesting shapes. and come up with new ways of using it.
And we are going to see a lot of very exciting stuff of that caliber in the future.
