Does AI "combine images" ?

Artists, stop this belief from holding you back at once.

What’s the one thing you’ve heard every artist say that no AI researcher ever said ?

Like a an urban legend, it is simple, quick, and pleasing to hear. Hearing it once is enough to remember it forever.

It is particularly prevalent among those artists who have settled down. They wish to ignore AI by cutting it down to size :

“To generate images, all AI does is recombine training images.”

Did you ever utter these words ?

Who started this urban legend ? I don’t know. But it’s time you move beyond as an artist. It’s time you open yourself up to the world.

I say this as someone who works at an AI lab :

AI models have billions of parameters. They are learned without human interference. Trying to understand how they work is like listening for a whisper in a hurricane.

Does AI know the principles of composition ? Sometimes it seems so. Does it know how light works ? Does it know about anatomy ? Does it know about color harmony ?

Can you hear a whisper in a hurricane ?

You’re an artist. You thrive in uncertainty. Don’t try to settle this matter prematurely.

When your mind is free of false beliefs, it attracts new ideas like a colorful flower attracts bees. Once you destroy this mental blockage, ideas will flow more freely in your head.
